Colombia is expanding its energy infrastructure through both grid upgrades and the development of renewable energy sources. In the Bogotá-Región 2030 Expansion Plan, Enel Colombia doubled the operational capacity of the Nueva Esperanza Substation in Soacha. This 75 billion peso investment increased transformation infrastructure from 450 MVA to 900 MVA to support energy distribution for more than four million residents in Bogotá and Cundinamarca. Simultaneously, the country is diversifying its electricity matrix through large-scale solar energy projects, particularly in the Caribbean region. Companies such as Enel and Isagen are leading these developments. Isagen, which operates the Shangri-La project, aims to add approximately 1,000 megawatts of new capacity by the end of 2027, utilizing battery storage systems to manage delivery during non-peak radiation hours. Expanding on this trend, French multinational Électricité de France (EDF) has set a target to reach an installed electrical capacity of approximately 350 MW in Colombia by the end of 2027. EDF currently operates 25 MW of biomass generation capacity and is constructing a 100 MW solar project in partnership with Grupo Mercantil Colpatria. To further strengthen its renewable energy portfolio, EDF and BTG Pactual are also in the process of acquiring hydroelectric and solar assets from Isagen.
