Colombia JEP transitional justice actions

In July 2025, the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) heard victims linked to the Gran Magdalena subcase request that the tribunal reopen the investigation of the 2002 murder of university dean Roque Morelli and summon former paramilitary commander José Gregorio Rojas Mendoza. The Communist Party of Colombia and the Union Patriótica also presented observations, framing themselves as collective political victims of state‑linked violence and urging stronger protection and accountability.

By August 2026, the JEP moved to a later stage of the transitional‑justice process, formally indicting 27 former FARC commanders—including the guerrilla’s last secretariat—for war crimes, crimes against humanity and gender‑based violence. The indictment, based on testimony from thousands of victims, marked a significant step toward holding former guerrilla leaders accountable for atrocities committed during Colombia’s armed conflict.
