Colombia meat traceability and fraud crackdown

An audit by Colombia's Comptroller's Office on July 25 exposed serious weaknesses in the country's bovine traceability system, citing disciplinary and penal infractions that facilitate animal smuggling, clandestine slaughter and tax evasion. The report warned that these gaps threaten the decade‑long beef export agreement with China, whose market standards are stricter than Colombia’s current practices.

The following day, Colombian authorities seized 280 kg of undocumented pork in Neiva and arrested nine individuals involved in a criminal network that marketed horse meat unsuitable for human consumption as beef in Bucaramanga. The suspects faced charges of organized crime, food fraud, environmental damage and animal cruelty. Officials said the operations demonstrate a rapid enforcement response aimed at protecting public health and securing the livestock supply chain amid the audit’s findings.
