The Colombian National Protection Unit (UNP), under director Didier Fabián Blanco Rodríguez, has initiated a review and withdrawal of security measures for several high-profile figures associated with the former administration of Gustavo Petro. Affected individuals include former ministers such as Armando Benedetti, José Antonio Ocampo, and Guillermo Alfonso Jaramillo, among others. These individuals have ten days to appeal the decision, as the UNP maintains that protection must be based on individual risk assessments rather than office occupancy. During subsequent political oversight debates in the House of Representatives, Director Blanco disclosed the high costs and administrative difficulties associated with these security schemes. He noted that the security detail for former Vice Ministry of Youth candidate Juliana Guerrero cost the state $739 739 million pesos over an eighteen-month period. Blanco also addressed the security requirements for Rodrigo Londoño, noting that while Londoño requested expanded measures, a study determined further protection was not feasible. Specifically, Londoño currently maintains a scheme consisting of 16 guards and six armored vehicles. Additionally, the UNP director highlighted administrative challenges, such as former officials failing to return assigned armored vehicles, and reported a significant increase in the agency’s use of service provision contracts, which has risen to approximately 2,800 contractors. In response to the failure of several former ministers and officials to return state-assigned vehicles, lawmakers such as House Vice President Simón Molina have called for audits of UNP resources to ensure the recovery of public property and proper accountability.
