The Colombian National Army has continued security campaigns to neutralize explosive devices placed by various armed groups. Following mid-August operations in Boyacá, where the First Brigade destroyed 20 devices attributed to the ELN’s Adonay Ardila Pinilla front, security concerns intensified in the Catatumbo region. Authorities issued alerts after an individual, allegedly linked to the ELN, intercepted a distribution truck in the San Pablo district, stealing over 100 gas cylinders feared to be intended for improvised explosive devices. In La Macarena, Meta, the Army neutralized an illegal depot in the Bocana Caño Gringo area containing 101 explosive devices and other materials linked to the ELN’s Ever Castro structure. In northern Antioquia, the Ituango-Medellín road was closed for 50 hours after FARC dissidents left an explosive device on the route. Violence has escalated through the use of advanced weaponry. In Pelaya, Cesar, troops from the 10th Brigade were targeted by a launch system deploying over 40 explosive devices, an action the Army described as a ‘terrorist action’. In response, President Abelardo De La Espriella convened a security council in Valledupar, announcing the deployment of anti-drone defense systems in municipalities such as El Copey and Valledupar to counter the rising use of unmanned aerial systems. In Sipí, Chocó, an ELN drone attack injured three soldiers. In Aguachica, Cesar, a joint operation involving the National Police, GAULA, and the National Army led to the arrest of Fabián Yesid Contreras Contreras, a member of the ELN’s Camilo Torres Restrepo Front. Authorities seized 4,950 rounds of ammunition, including 1,900 .50 caliber and 3,050 5.56 mm projectiles, along with a vehicle and communication devices. Investigations indicate that Contreras was responsible for receiving, storing, and transporting war material intended for operations in Aguachica, La Gloria, Río de Oro, and the Catatumbo region.
