Colombian military and dissident group conflict

Overview

Conflict between the Colombian military and FARC dissident groups has intensified across several regions, involving lethal combat and advanced weaponry. In Huila, a drone attack using improvised explosive devices in the rural area of Aipecito, Neiva, killed professional soldier Samuel Pinzón Barliza Ipuana and injured another service member. The strike targeted troops from the 9th Artillery Campaign Battalion during operations to protect civilians. The military attributed the attack to the Ismael Ruiz structure of the Iván Mordisco faction. In response, President Abelardo De La Espriella ordered the immediate deployment of offensive military capabilities to the region. Violence in Huila has since escalated, with eight drone attacks using explosives reported over a two-month period. These strikes have targeted municipalities including Teruel, Neiva, La Plata, Aipe, and Palermo, resulting in further injuries to security forces and damage to police facilities and civilian property. Authorities attribute this offensive to the Ismael Ruiz and Hernando González Acosta fronts of the Bloque Central Isaías Pardo, part of the Iván Mordisco dissident faction. The Defensoría del Pueblo has warned of the territorial expansion of these groups, noting that the attacks have caused significant fear, necessitating curfews and the relocation of schools. Security incidents have also expanded to other departments. In Nariño, military operations against the Iván Mordisco group in El Charco resulted in the death of a suspected member and the seizure of 675 million pesos in cash, a motorized boat, and ammunition. In Antioquia, the army rescued two teenagers, aged 16 and 17, who had been forcibly recruited by sub-structure 18 of the Iván Mordisco dissidents. In Norte de Santander, authorities destroyed an arsenal of approximately 100 homemade grenades in Sardinata, intended for use on drones by the ELN's Juan Fernando Porras Martínez front.
