Colorado student absenteeism trends

Overview

During the 2025-26 school year, Colorado reported a reduction in chronic student absenteeism. The state’s chronic absenteeism rate fell by 0.9 percentage points to 27.5%, marking the lowest rate in four years. This change represents 11,341 fewer students missing 10% or more of their school days compared to the previous year.

Statewide attendance rates rose slightly to 91.5%. While some districts on the Western Slope outperformed the state average, Colorado Education Commissioner Susana Córdova noted that further improvements are necessary to reach the state’s goal of reducing chronic absenteeism to 15% by the 2027-28 school year. To assist with this objective, over 110 schools across 83 districts have participated in a state attendance campaign to receive resources and tools.
