Colorado has experienced a period of volatile weather characterized by contrasting moisture patterns. In mid-September, the state faced expanding drought conditions, with exceptional drought covering 15 percent of the area, particularly in the San Luis Valley. During this time, monsoonal moisture simultaneously created flash flood risks on the Western Slope, especially in canyons and recent burn scars. By late September, the weather pattern began transitioning from late-summer warmth to cooler, wetter conditions. The state’s higher peaks received early dustings of snow, and monsoonal moisture continued to drive showers and thunderstorms across the Western Slope. This shift brought temperatures down to as much as 10 degrees below normal in rain-affected locations. As of late September, a significant storm system is expected to bring heavy rain and potential flash flooding across the state. Moisture is being pulled into the region from a Pacific storm system and the remnants of Hurricane Polo. A Flash Flood Watch is anticipated for southern Colorado, particularly in areas along and south of Highway 50 and the Eastern Plains, with the most active weather expected mid-week. In the central and northern mountains, the weather is expected to bring increased cloud cover, rain, and the beginning of the season's snowpack. While much of the precipitation is focused on the southern half of the state, mountain towns like Aspen may see up to an inch of rain. Temperatures are expected to drop, with highs ranging from the mid-50s to the 60s in many areas.
