The Bosniak Cultural Community has announced a project to install a monument in Sarajevo dedicated to the medieval Bosnian ruler Ban Kulin. The sculpture, titled ‘Kulin, Ban of Bosnia’ by Adis Lukač, is proposed for a symbolic location such as the area in front of the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The initiative aligns with the 837th anniversary of the Charter of Ban Kulin, issued on August 29, 1189. The charter, which serves as a historical agreement of friendship and trade between Ban Kulin and the citizens of Dubrovnik, is regarded as a foundational document of Bosnian statehood and literacy. It is frequently described as the ‘birth certificate of Bosnia’ because it demonstrates the region’s early political organization and diplomatic traditions. As the oldest preserved state document among South Slavic peoples, the charter was written in the Old Bosnian vernacular using the Bosančica script. While two copies are preserved in Dubrovnik, a third copy was stolen in the 19th century and is currently held by the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg. Bosnia and Herzegovina has requested the return of this document, but Russia has declined the request, stating the charter is part of their ‘shared history’. To mark the 837th anniversary, the municipality of Bugojno, in collaboration with the Bosnian Academic Society of Austria, hosted a commemoration. The event featured former Croatian President Stjepan Mesić, who spoke on the importance of preserving Bosnia and Herzegovina through dialogue and cooperation. Additionally, security expert Professor Ahmed Kico discussed the charter’s role in safeguarding state continuity against external pressures.
