Salvo D’Acquisto, a Carabinieri vice-brigadier, is recognized as a symbol of sacrifice for his actions during the 1943 Nazi occupation of Italy. To save 22 civilians held hostage following an explosion near Torrimpietra, D’Acquisto claimed sole responsibility for the attack. He was subsequently executed by German forces on September 23, 1943, and posthumously awarded the Medaglia d’Oro al Valor Militare in 1945. Following his proclamation as ‘Venerable’ by Pope Francis on February 25, 2025, D’Acquisto’s legacy has seen increased religious and institutional recognition. In Santo Stefano di Camastra, the Associazione Nazionale Carabinieri organized the ‘Dono della Vita’ (Gift of Life) ceremony, which included a mass and wreath-laying attended by the Prefect of Messina and local leaders. On September 22, 2026, various Italian cities and institutions held ceremonies to mark the 83rd anniversary of his death. Commemorations took place in Fiumicino at Borgo di Palidoro, Torre di Palidoro, and Passoscuro. The General Commander of the Carabinieri, Salvatore Luongo, participated in these events, describing D’Acquisto as an ‘eternal symbol of courage and moral rebirth for the nation.’ Other ceremonies were held in Varese and Taranto, where authorities gathered at a dedicated stele at the University of Bari’s Jonico Department to honor his legacy of altruism and duty. In October 2026, the city of Gaeta announced it will officially rename its main maritime port in honor of D’Acquisto. A dedication ceremony is scheduled for October 9, 2026, on Lungomare Caboto, featuring the unveiling of a commemorative plaque and a concert by the Carabinieri Band.
