Cuba is observing the 67th anniversary of the disappearance of revolutionary figure Camilo Cienfuegos, who died in an aviation accident on October 28, 1959. Across the island, traditions include placing flowers in rivers, coasts, and reservoirs to honor his memory. In the city of Cienfuegos, preparations involve massive parades featuring students, workers, and pioneers, alongside cultural programs from the Benny Moré School of Art and health education campaigns by medical students. In Yaguajay, the 33rd Colloquium on the Life and Work of Camilo Cienfuegos brought together approximately 300 participants, including combatants and scholars, to present works for the Camilo Cienfuegos National Museum. Recent tributes have also expanded to provinces such as Camagüey, Granma, and Sancti Spíritus, where leaders have used the anniversary to condemn the United States embargo. On the 67th anniversary, a central ceremony was held at the Malecón in Havana, attended by President Miguel Díaz-Canel and other high-ranking state officials. During these acts, officials linked Cienfuegos’s legacy to current political struggles, specifically citing the economic crisis caused by the United States blockade and recent diplomatic successes at the United Nations regarding a resolution against said blockade. In Nicaragua, the Sandinista government and the Cuban Embassy organized a tribute in Managua. Held on Lake Xolotlán, the event included an audiovisual presentation of Cienfuegos’s life and the symbolic offering of flowers to the water. Nicaraguan officials emphasized his role as a symbol of Latin American struggle and expressed solidarity with Cuba regarding economic restrictions and fuel shortages. Cuban Ambassador Iliana Fonseca also participated in the Managua ceremony, which highlighted the historical solidarity and shared revolutionary ideals between the two nations.
