In early October, the community of St. Catherine Parish in Nasielsk held a solemn Mass led by Bishop Mirosław Milewski to welcome the relics of Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko. During the ceremony, the Bishop honored Popiełuszko as a symbol of faithfulness to truth and noted his pastoral legacy, specifically his ‘Masses for the Homeland.’ On October 19, 2026, commemorations were held across Poland to mark the 42nd anniversary of Popiełuszko’s death, coinciding with the National Day of Remembrance for Unyielding Clergy. In Warsaw, central ceremonies took place at the Sanctuary of Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko in Żoliborz. Archbishop Adrian Galbas led a Mass attended by the priest’s family, state and local officials, leadership from NSZZ Solidarity, and political figures such as Jarosław Kaczyński. The Archbishop emphasized Popiełuszko’s ‘inner freedom’ despite the constraints of the communist regime. In the regions of Górsko and Włocławek—the locations where he was kidnapped and killed by communist-era Security Service officers—local residents and officials participated in memorial services. In Górsko, participants held a Way of the Cross near a symbolic memorial cross, while in Włocławek, hundreds of people and worker delegations joined a procession with the priest’s relics near the Vistula dam. Additional ceremonies were held in Kielce at the Kielce Cathedral Basilica. The Mass was presided over by Father Marian Janus, a former colleague of Popiełuszko. Following the liturgy, participants gathered at Popiełuszko’s monument to pray for his swift canonization. In Płock, a commemorative Mass was held at the St. Stanislaus Kostka parish, where Father Roman Bagiński reflected on Popiełuszko’s legacy regarding conscience and dignity. In Suchowola, ceremonies scheduled for October 25 include flower-laying at the graves of Marianna and Władysław Popiełuszko and at a monument dedicated to the priest.
