Commemorations of Kwame Nkrumah in Ghana

In September 2026, Ghana observed commemorations for its first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. The Ministry of the Interior officially declared September 21, 2026, a statutory public holiday for Founder’s Day, following a 2025 legislative amendment that consolidated previous observances into a single date.

During the NkrumahFest in Nkroful, leaders and family members gathered to honor Nkrumah’s 117th birthday and discuss his political legacy. Samia Nkrumah, the late president’s daughter, addressed the community, rejecting historical claims that the nation was satisfied following his 1966 overthrow, which she characterized as “negative propaganda.” She also apologized to the Nkroful community for the family’s long absence, citing trauma from political instability and assassination attempts against her father, and pledged the family’s return to contribute to Ghana’s progress.

Political figures, including former NPP running mate Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh and NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, called for national unity and urged citizens to rise above partisan politics. The Convention People’s Party (CPP) emphasized reviving Nkrumah’s visions of industrialization and economic self-reliance. Additionally, scholar Professor P. L. O. Lumumba noted that while Nkrumah’s impact was monumental, his dream of a fully liberated and united Africa remains an “unfinished project.”
