Various Greek municipalities are organizing ceremonies to mark the 82nd anniversary of Nazi atrocities committed during World War II. In Chortiatis, the municipality has announced a three-day series of commemorative events from August 31 to September 2. These events honor the 149 residents, mostly women and children, who were killed by Nazi flamethrowers on September 2, 1944. The program includes a historical walk, a peace cycling event, musical performances, and a memorial service at the Byzantine Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior. In the Amari region of Crete, a ceremony was held on August 22 to honor 164 individuals executed by Nazi occupation forces in the Kentro villages on the same date in 1944. The memorial service at the Monument of the Fallen included a prayer, a roll call of the dead, and the laying of wreaths, attended by local officials and religious leaders. In Koksares, residents and officials gathered on August 29 to commemorate the 82nd anniversary of the village’s Holocaust by Nazi occupation forces. Held at the Monument to the Fallen, the ceremony honored victims and the village’s history as a stronghold of the National Resistance. Deputy Mayor of Culture Evangelia Glampedaki noted that local resistance began with the first armed clash with German forces in Rethymno in October 1941. The event also featured testimony from Emmanouil Mathioudais regarding a February 1944 blockade, during which German forces conducted operations and arrests following intelligence regarding the presence of EAM members.
