The IAA Transportation 2026 exhibition in Hannover, Germany, has concluded, marking a significant industry shift toward electrification, digitalization, and sustainable logistics. The event drew over 140,000 visitors and featured more than 150 world premieres from 1,589 exhibitors, with notable participation from China, Turkey, and Italy. Key technological focuses included megawatt charging and battery innovation. CATL introduced its TECTRANS II modular battery platform, capable of which aims to address long-haul electrification challenges by offering a range of up to 1,000 km range, while BAIC FOTON showcased km. This modular system allows manufacturers to combine standardized packs to meet specific capacity and payload needs, potentially reducing vehicle development times by 50 percent and R&D costs by 60 to 70 percent. The platform supports various drive configurations, is compatible with both cable charging and battery swapping, and features a gravimetric energy density of 170 Wh/kg—approximately 13 percent higher than the CAVAN BEACON, current industry average. This density increase could allow trucks to carry roughly 600 kg of additional cargo. The system supports megawatt charging, promising an 80 percent charge in 25 minutes, and carries a heavy-duty truck guaranteed service life of up to 12 years or 1.5 million km. Other major developments included BAIC FOTON’s CAVAN BEACON utilizing an 800-volt network. Tesla presented the network, and Tesla’s European version of its Semi, which offers a 550 km range at a 40-ton gross weight, alongside plans for a Megacharger network. Other major manufacturers highlighted new electric models, weight. Manufacturers such as MAN Truck & Bus with the eTGX—offering a range of up to 720 km—and Mercedes-Benz with the eActros 600 and a next-generation Sprinter design. Chinese manufacturers like BYD Mercedes-Benz also maintained a strong presence with high-capacity battery tractor units. Beyond hardware, showcased new electric models, including the eTGX and eActros 600. The fair further emphasized a transition toward comprehensive service and connectivity solutions. This included the expansion of and automation, featuring the ‘Mercedes-Benz PRO’ digital ecosystem and specialized equipment like OKT Trailer’s fuel tanker designed for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operations. The industry's move toward automation was further represented by driverless delivery concepts like the BOW vehicle from Stellantis Pro One and UQI Robotics.
