Warrap State in South Sudan has experienced a series of violent cattle raiding attacks and communal clashes. On August 9, an attack at the Ariec cattle camp in Tonj North County resulted in at least 60 deaths and approximately 50 injuries. Warrap State Information Minister Wol Mayom reported that the fatalities included 37 people from the Pan Ariik community and 11 from the Apuk-Padoc community, while 15 attackers were killed. Following this, another wave of violence occurred around 5:00 local time targeting the Machar-Pakuek cattle camp and Mading Juer Boma village. This later incident left at least 49 people dead and 33 injured. The Warrap Ministry of Information identified casualties among the Juer Dinka community and various other tribes, as well as 21 alleged Nuer attackers. Local authorities have linked these clashes spokesperson William Wal Mayom Bol attributed the raid to a an armed transborder criminal network, alleging suggesting involvement from armed members groups in the neighboring Unity State. The recurring violence has caused significant displacement and increased humanitarian needs. The Warrap government has issued an urgent plea for humanitarian assistance, citing a “catastrophic humanitarian situation.” This comes as the United Nations notes that approximately 10 million of South Sudan’s 12.2 million residents require aid, with millions facing acute food insecurity. In response to the initial August 9 attack, the state government planned a disarmament campaign across Warrap, Unity, and Western Bahr el Ghazal states to mitigate communal violence.
