The market for compact, palm-sized e-readers is expanding with new hardware focused on portability. At IFA 2026, PocketBook announced the debut of the PocketBook Q, a 130-gram device with a 5.84-inch E Ink Carta 1300 touchscreen. The device utilizes a Linux-based operating system to provide a distraction-free experience and includes features such as Bluetooth audiobook support, SMARTlight adaptive technology, and IPX4 water resistance. Following these announcements, Boox unveiled details for its upcoming Picco compact e-reader. Initially described as a sub-4-inch device running a streamlined Linux system to limit users to the Boox store and epub files, the Picco was designed for one-handed operation with physical buttons and a microSD card slot. Boox has since launched the Picco, introducing it as part of a new “Tiles” product category. The device is roughly the size of a playing card, measuring 105.5 x 62 x 5.5 mm and weighing 58 grams. It features a 3.97-inch monochrome ePaper display with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels (235 PPI) and integrated front lighting with adjustable brightness and color temperature. While earlier reports suggested a lack of smartphone integration, the launched model includes a dedicated magnetic cover that allows the eReader to be attached to the back of a smartphone. The software supports customization for typography, margins, and line spacing, and the hardware supports automatic screen rotation in four directions. Pre-orders for the Picco are now available on the Boox website, priced at approximately $109.99 or 109.99 euros. Designed to discourage smartphone scrolling during short breaks, the device utilizes specialized firmware rather than Android, meaning it lacks Google Play Store access but supports formats such as EPUB and MOBI. It also includes built-in tools like a Pomodoro timer. Shipping is expected to commence between October and November.
