A massive landfill collapse occurred in the Dar-es-Salam neighborhood of the Gbessia commune in Conakry, Guinea, following heavy rainfall that saturated the waste site. The landslide, which took place around 02:00 local time on a Sunday, August 23, buried several nearby ~~homes~~ homes, shacks, and makeshift shelters under refuse. At least 30 people have died and at least 22 others were injured, with six individuals reported to be in serious condition. Rescue operations involving the military, civil protection, the Red Cross, and local volunteers have utilized excavators to search for survivors and recover bodies trapped beneath the debris. Government officials, including Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah and Minister of Territorial Administration Djenabou Touré, have pledged medical care for the injured and assistance for affected families. Prime Minister Bah has visited the site to offer ~~condolences,~~ condolences and oversee the emergency response, while Minister Touré has ~~overseen search-and-rescue efforts and~~ stated that efforts are underway to ensure the safe relocation of remaining families in the area. The site has a history of instability, having experienced a similar landslide in 2017. In the wake of the tragedy, opposition leader Cellou Dalein Diallo has called for a “transparent investigation” into the circumstances surrounding the event.
