The landmark British documentary series ‘7 Up’, which began in 1964, is concluding with its final installment, ‘70 Up’. The project has tracked the lives of 14 individuals from diverse social backgrounds every seven years to chronicle the changing social landscape of post-war Britain. Directed by Asif Kapadia following the death of Michael Apted, the final chapter will feature two 90-minute films. The series will include original participants such as Sue Davis, Bruce Balden, and Tony Walker, though participants Lynn Johnson and Nick Hitchon have passed away. The decision to continue the series was prompted by producer Claire Lewis after Nick Hitchon requested a final interview shortly before his death. In the final installment, the documentary revisits the remaining participants as they enter their seventies to observe the impact of class, environment, and fate. For example, Tony reflects on his childhood ambition to become a professional jockey, a dream thwarted when he was told he had become too heavy for the sport. To accompany the main feature, ITV plans to broadcast two companion programs: ‘7 Up: The Story’, which examines the series' origins and 1964 British society, and ‘70 Up: The Victorians’, which uses archive footage to provide historical context.
