Consumer financial protection and cash safety guidance

Overview

Financial and consumer protection experts are providing guidance to help citizens avoid losses related to banking services and cash handling.

In the banking sector, the National Bank of Serbia has released a public overview of payment service fees to help consumers, especially pensioners, compare costs for account maintenance and ATM usage. Regarding digital transactions, experts warn that reversing real-time transfers is nearly impossible. While banks can request a recipient's consent to return funds sent to an incorrect IBAN, recovery is not guaranteed and may involve fees.

Regarding physical currency, experts have identified several risks associated with cash. To combat counterfeit 20 and 50 euro notes, the ‘feel, look, tilt’ method is recommended to verify paper texture, watermarks, and holographic elements. Other identified risks include failing to verify change against receipts, mistaking similar coins, and accepting heavily damaged banknotes. Under central bank rules, a banknote remains valid if more than 50 percent of its surface area is intact.
