Prominent flamenco artists have introduced new works in Spain. Israel Galván prepared to premiere ‘Bolero de Blanco y Negro’ at the Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla, a production reinterpreting Maurice Ravel’s ‘Bolero’ through flamenco elements such as percussion and vocals. Simultaneously, dancer María Pagés presented ‘Bilbao Square’ at Centro Danza Matadero, an autobiographical piece exploring her personal history and identity. Following the announcement, Israel Galván successfully premiered ‘Bolero de Blanco y Negro’ at the Teatro de la Maestranza. The performance featured collaborations with pianist Andrea Rebaudengo and percussionist José Carrasco, and was a co-production involving the Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla, Fondazione Teatro Grande di Brescia, and Opera National de Bordeaux. The XXIV Bienal de Flamenco has since featured a diverse range of performances. Israel Galván’s ‘Bolero de blanco y negro’ at the Teatro de la Maestranza has been noted by critics for its “intellectualized approach and use of parody,” utilizing pantomime, humor, and irony alongside the music of Maurice Ravel and Moncho. Other notable Bienal performances include Pastora Galván’s ‘Tribusssh!’ at the Teatro Alameda, directed by Israel Galván, which seeks to bridge rock and flamenco through Andalusian rock influences. Additionally, Andrés Marín presented ‘Desierto’ at the Teatro Central, a performance exploring his connection to the La Alameda neighborhood.
