Continental recycled material tire development
Overview
Continental has developed a concept tire utilizing approximately 43% recycled materials as part of the EU-funded ZEvRA project. The initiative seeks to promote a circular economy in the electric vehicle sector by replacing virgin raw materials with components such as recycled steel, rubber from end-of-life tires, polyester fibers from PET bottles, recovered carbon black, and recycled sand.
While the prototype achieved a top rating in the EU tire label’s rolling-resistance category, Continental noted that the product is not yet ready for mass production. The company identified several obstacles to commercialization, including the need for industrial-scale material availability, immature recycling infrastructure, and a lack of standardized European definitions for “recycled” materials.
