Andrea Bocelli concerts in Indonesia face permit revocation

Overview

The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has called for the cancellation of upcoming Andrea Bocelli concerts scheduled for October 31 at Borobudur Temple and November 3 in Jakarta. MUI Chairman for Foreign Relations Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim argued that the cancellation is necessary to uphold Indonesia’s constitutional stance against colonialism and to show solidarity with Palestine, citing Bocelli’s past involvement in events linked to Israel.

The MUI emphasized that the estimated USD 44 million in economic benefits should not outweigh humanitarian principles. In response, the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism is weighing the potential cancellation. Ministry Secretary Bayu Aji met with MUI officials to discuss the matter, stating the government intends to be “tegak lurus” (straight/aligned) with the MUI’s decision once a formal stance is reached. Officials are seeking a resolution that respects religious values and Indonesia’s support for Palestinian independence, suggesting that a statement from Bocelli’s management regarding Palestinian freedom could help resolve the tension.

Following continued opposition from the MUI and student groups such as PP Hima Persis, regulatory hurdles have intensified. Critics specifically pointed to Bocelli’s 2022 performance in Tel Aviv as a contradiction to Indonesia’s pro-Palestine position. Consequently, the Magelang Police (Polresta Magelang) have officially revoked the recommendation for the October 31 concert at Borobudur Temple. The Ministry of Tourism continues to study the situation, maintaining that the government remains committed to its stance on Palestinian independence.
