DMK Principal Secretary KN Nehru stated that Stalin “underwent torture in custody and suffered a broken jaw,” noting that former MP C Chittibabu died while protecting him. Nehru criticized TVK leader C Joseph Vijay for using “cinematic dialogues” to address the matter. Conversely, Minister Nirmal Kumar has challenged these claims, arguing that no official detention order has been produced to substantiate the arrest under MISA. Kumar criticized the DMK for relying on “newspaper clippings, books, or commission reports” instead of official legal documentation, and addressed allegations regarding the potential destruction of evidence after the DMK took power in 1989. In response to the dispute, the Justice Ismail Commission—an official inquiry appointed by the AIADMK government under MGR—documented that Stalin was indeed a political prisoner. The commission’s findings detailed that Stalin and others were detained in Madras Central Prison in February 1976 and were subjected to beatings by prison authorities. MISA was a law enacted in 1971 that permitted the government to detain individuals without trial to maintain public order and national security.
