The government of President Abelardo de la Espriella ordered the removal of over 30 historical and artistic pieces from the Museo Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá. The withdrawn items, primarily from the ‘Hacer sociedad’ gallery, include materials related to feminism, LGBTIQ+ rights, the 1991 Constitution, and the 2016 Peace Agreement with the Farc. Notable objects removed include the ‘Balígrafo’—a pen made from a bullet used to sign the peace treaty—and campaign posters for assassinated political figures Bernardo Jaramillo Ossa and Carlos Pizarro Leongómez. Additionally, the museum removed historical cycling jerseys belonging to Lucho Herrera. Minister of Culture Paola Holguín defended the decision, stating that the museum must not serve as an instrument for ‘political indoctrination’ or promote ‘distorted’ versions of history, specifically citing opposition to ‘woke culture’ and ‘social-communism.’ The President characterized the initiative as a necessary ‘cultural counter-revolution’ intended to prevent the exaltation of individuals linked to terrorism. terrorism and to combat ‘atheist social communism.’ The removals have sparked widespread controversy and protests. Six modern art museums issued a joint statement expressing concern over the loss of curatorial autonomy. Demonstrations in front of the museum led to clashes with the National Anti-Disturbance Unit (UNADI), who used water cannons, tear gas, and stun grenades to disperse crowds. The Ombudsman’s office has criticized the response, describing the use of force as ‘unnecessary and disproportionate.’ In response to the removals, the 24th Family Court of Bogotá has admitted a legal action (tutela) and issued provisional measures ordering the museum to preserve the items and provide a detailed report regarding their current location and condition. Furthermore, the controversy has entered the legislative arena, with Congresswoman Jennifer Pedraza announcing a summons for Minister Holguín to face a political control debate.
