During Pakistan’s Independence Day celebrations on August 14, 2026, President Asif Ali Zardari stated that the nation ‘tolerates’ its Hindu population, which he estimated at 3–4 percent. Zardari claimed that Hindus in Pakistan are as free as anywhere else and would ‘rather be with us than be with them’ in India.

These remarks drew significant criticism from various figures. Indian screenwriter Javed Akhtar called the comments insensitive and mocked the President on X. Former diplomat K P Fabian argued that the focus on ‘tolerance’ highlights the actual suffering of minorities and noted that Zardari’s population estimates contrast with Pew Research Centre data suggesting the Hindu population is as low as 2.1 percent.

Critics have argued that framing the existence of an indigenous community as mere ‘tolerance’ is condescending, implying that equal citizenship is a favor rather than a constitutional right. The rhetoric follows previous statements by Army Chief General Asim Munir, who described Hindus and Muslims as fundamental opposites, a stance viewed by some as an attempt to revive the exclusionary Two-Nation Theory.
