Controversy over Prabowo Subianto religious book

In early September 2026, the publication of a book titled ‘Islam ala Prabowo: Cara Prabowo Subianto Mengamalkan Ajaran Islam’ triggered significant debate in Indonesia. Published by leaders from the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) and the National Board of Zakat (Baznas), the volume examines President Prabowo Subianto’s Islamic practices throughout his life and presidency. Critics expressed concerns that the book serves as a tool for political branding, using religious authority to build a personal image.

As the controversy progressed, critics specifically challenged the title, arguing it implies a unique model of Islam belongs to the president. Observers noted that the narrative relies on third-party interpretations rather than the president’s own spiritual reflections.

Prof. Dr. KH Asep Saifuddin Chalim, author of the book’s epilogue, stated he had previously advised the publishers to use a less sensitive title, such as ‘Prabowo's Leadership through the Lens of Islam.’ Chalim clarified that his intended message focused on leadership inspired by Caliph Umar bin Abdul Aziz and anti-corruption efforts, rather than an attempt to deify the president.
