Controversy over Soviet Marshal Konev monument in Slovakia

Overview

In early October 2026, a monument dedicated to Soviet Marshal Ivan Konev was unveiled in Kružlová, Slovakia, near the Dukla Pass. The project was led by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and attended by officials including the Russian Ambassador to Slovakia. While intended to commemorate the Carpathian-Dukla offensive of World War II, the installation drew criticism from Czech political figures, such as former Prime Minister Petr Fiala, who characterized it as ‘another gift to the Kremlin’ due to Konev’s role in suppressing the 1956 Hungarian Uprising.

By late October, the monument became the site of a protest by the Demokrati political party. Protesters covered the statue with a white cloth featuring red stains to symbolize bullet wounds, accompanied by messages stating that a free society should not celebrate occupiers. The party described Konev as a leader of the Soviet occupation responsible for many deaths.

On October 23, the monument was targeted by further vandalism. The memorial plaque was broken, and the base of the statue was defaced with red paint and the Hungarian word ‘gyilkos’, meaning ‘murderer’. The sculptor, Slavomír Gibej, reported that security footage showed a vehicle with Hungarian license plates at the scene. Gibej and the Slovak Association of Anti-Fascist Fighters (SZPB) have filed criminal complaints. Gibej maintained that the monument commemorates the 1944 Carpathian-Dukla Operation and the sacrifices of soldiers rather than Konev’s entire career, while the SZPB called for increased security for military memorials.
