Hungarian footballer Miloš Kerkez and his father, Sebastián Kerkez, became subjects of controversy following social media activity perceived as pro-Russian. The Ukrainian website Mirotvorec added both individuals to a ‘liquidation list,’ accusing them of supporting Russian aggression. This followed an Instagram post by Sebastián Kerkez featuring a photo of Miloš set to a Russian rap song, which was interpreted in Ukraine as a provocation. The situation escalated when Miloš Kerkez, who was suspended from a Nations League match against Ukraine, Ukraine following a physical altercation with Ukrainian player Viktor Tsyhankov, chose to attend a second-division Serbian football match near his birthplace instead of supporting the Hungarian national team. This decision drew public backlash and threats. Hungarian officials have responded to the developments. Politician Balázs Hidvéghi described the Mirotvorec listing as an ‘open threat to all Hungarians,’ while Foreign Minister Anita Orban condemned the ‘stigmatization and every form of threat’ directed at the athlete. Miloš Kerkez has attempted to distance himself from his father’s actions, stating, ‘It is important to understand that I am not my father.’ Foreign Minister Orban has since engaged in discussions with Ukrainian government officials, the Hungarian Football Federation, and the embassy to resolve the matter. She emphasized that Mirotvorec is not an official state channel of Ukraine and warned against the labeling and potential threats to Hungarian citizens. Kerkez has maintained that he was merely defending his teammates during the match in question and denies supporting Russian aggression.
