Children’s educator Rachel Griffin Accurso, known as ‘Ms. Rachel’, has faced public scrutiny regarding her commentary and associations related to the Israel-Hamas war. Initial controversy arose from a confrontation with podcaster Avi Lichtschein, during which Accurso clarified she is not anti-Israel but is critical of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli government. She specifically raised concerns regarding the death toll of children and questioned whether the situation could be classified as a genocide. Lichtschein challenged these views, accusing her of spreading ‘blood libel’. Subsequent scrutiny followed the resurfacing of a video in which Accurso referred to Palestinian photojournalist Motaz Azaiza as a “friend”. This occurred alongside recent admissions by Azaiza regarding his coverage of the October 7, 2023, attacks. Accurso’s humanitarian activism and opposition to the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza have contributed to her becoming a more polarizing figure. Accurso has since intensified her advocacy for Palestinian children. During a podcast appearance with Ilana Glazer, she criticized “uncancellable” celebrities for their silence regarding humanitarian crises in Gaza and Sudan. Following reports that rapper Macklemore was removed from an Ed Sheeran tour after making pro-Palestine remarks, Accurso announced her intention to match a $1 million donation pledged by Macklemore to Palestinian aid organizations. More recently, Accurso faced renewed backlash after stating in an interview that she would decline to work with “privileged” individuals who remain silent about civilians in Gaza, while noting exceptions for those whose livelihoods might be jeopardized by speaking out. The Campaign Against Antisemitism criticized these remarks as an exclusionary “political purity test”. Additionally, comedian Michael Rapaport released a video mimicking Accurso’s teaching style to accuse her of spreading misinformation and stating, “You hate Jews.” Accurso has previously rejected accusations of antisemitism.
