The Coțofenești helmet, a 2,400 year old Getic princely artifact stolen from the Netherlands, is undergoing restoration at the National Museum of Romanian History. Romanian Culture Minister Ioana Ciocan announced that the artifact is being worked on by a team of experts, including precious metal specialists from the Netherlands. Restorer Alexandru Dozsa has used experimental thermoplastic molds to address mechanical deformations caused during the theft. While the helmet has been returned to near its original shape, experts are preserving minor traces of handling to maintain authenticity. The final stage of restoration involves reattaching the neck guard to resolve stability issues. Officials have scheduled the helmet to be displayed to the public on January 15, 2027, to coincide with National Culture Day. As of November 2026, the National Museum of Romanian History (MNIR) confirmed the artifact has entered its final restoration stage. The piece was recovered in April 2026 following its theft from the Drents Museum in January 2025. Restorer Alexandru Dozsa utilized customized pressure systems between thermoplastic molds to repair severe structural deformations. Museum officials stated that the most difficult challenge, addressing the flattening of the helmet, has been successfully resolved. Remaining tasks include minor adjustments, such as reattaching a decorative collar.
