Copa del Rey tournament scheduling and disciplinary rulings

Overview

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced the first-round schedule for the Copa del Rey, featuring 56 single-match knockout ties. Amidst the scheduling, a disciplinary ruling was issued regarding the match between Atlético Unión Güímar and Sporting Hortaleza. Due to violent incidents involving stones and fireworks thrown at a team bus, the RFEF ordered the tie to be played behind closed doors at a neutral venue in Tenerife.

Sporting Hortaleza eventually secured advancement following a 3-3 draw in extra time. The club leveraged a 1-0 result from a previous leg that had been suspended due to violence. Following this historic progression, Sporting Hortaleza president Miguel Romón expressed the need to secure a larger stadium in the Community of Madrid, such as those used by Leganés or CF Fuenlabrada, to accommodate the expected crowd for their upcoming match against Sevilla FC.
