The Copa Libertadores knockout stages have progressed to the semifinals. Palmeiras secured their spot after a dramatic penalty shootout victory against LDU Quito, following a 3-3 aggregate draw in the second leg. Despite a late comeback by LDU, goalkeeper Carlos Miguel saved two penalties, and striker Vitor Roque scored during regulation and the shootout. However, manager Abel Ferreira received an automatic suspension following a red card during the match. Palmeiras will face Fluminense in an all-Brazilian semifinal; they hold a 2-1 lead from the first leg, though Vitor Roque remains a doubt for the decisive second leg due to an ankle sprain. Assistant coach Vitor Castanheira noted that the team must evaluate the player’s condition daily, stating, “It is one less option that we have.” In the other bracket, Estudiantes advanced after defeating Corinthians and Flamengo. Following a 1-1 draw with Corinthians in the first leg, Estudiantes won the second leg 1-0 at the Neo Química Arena with a late goal by Alexis Castro. In the semifinals, Estudiantes eliminated Flamengo at the Maracanã via a 3-2 penalty shootout after two 0-0 draws. Flamengo has filed a formal complaint with CONMEBOL seeking to overturn its elimination, contesting the eligibility of defender Marcos Rojo. The dispute centers on Rojo’s registration, which CONMEBOL and FIFA reportedly rejected twice because the Argentine transfer window had closed. Although the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) granted Estudiantes a provisional injunction allowing Rojo to play, Flamengo argues this does not exempt the club from sporting sanctions. Flamengo ~~asserts it notified both CAS and Estudiantes prior to the match of its intent to pursue legal action~~ is citing historical precedents involving Santos in 2018 and Chapecoense in 2017 where administrative defeats were imposed for irregular lineups. The club is requesting a decision before the final on November 28 in Montevideo.
