Copper mining in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has come under renewed scrutiny as stakeholders weigh economic opportunities against environmental sustainability. While the region has historically produced significant copper volumes, new interest in mining projects has raised concerns regarding impacts on 1.5 million acres of forest, soil quality, biodiversity, and watershed health.

As the debate progresses, the Copperwood Project has emerged as a focal point. A statewide poll by EPIC-MRA indicates that 71% of Michigan voters support the planned mine, driven by the potential for high-paying jobs and economic revitalization in areas facing industrial decline. Although 46% of respondents expressed concerns regarding environmental impacts, proponents maintain that the project will adhere to strict state regulations. In response to regional economic needs, the ‘Our U.P., Our Future’ coalition—comprising community leaders, business owners, and state legislators—has formed to advocate for responsible economic development.

In August 2026, the Michigan Strategic Fund approved $50 million in state funding for infrastructure related to the Copperwood Mine in Gogebic County via a 7-2 vote. Approximately $44.9 million will be allocated to Highland Copper for power, internet, and communication lines, while $12.5 million is designated for road repairs and rebuilding sections of County Road 519. The allocation has drawn criticism from lawmakers questioning why a private company should receive taxpayer assistance and arguing that the funding structure allows the board to bypass standard legislative review. Officials from InvestUP stated the grant is structured on a reimbursable basis to protect taxpayers.
