Corbières wildfire recovery and prevention
Overview
One year after the massive wildfire known as ‘the Ogre of the Corbières’ destroyed over 17,000 hectares in the Aude department of France, recovery and prevention efforts are underway.
Initial recovery efforts focused on ‘territorial listening’ sessions conducted by the National Union of Local Development Actors (Unadel). These sessions, involving over 120 interviews, aimed to address long-term needs such as water management, agricultural transformation, and landscape management, while residents worked to preserve the memory of the disaster.
As part of the Corbières 2030 reconstruction plan, authorities are now promoting pastoralism as a wildfire prevention tool to create natural firebreaks. However, local livestock farmers have raised concerns regarding the economic viability of this approach, questioning if they are being used merely as ‘mowers’ and calling for financial compensation if grazing for land maintenance interferes with traditional production.
