Corfu waste management crisis

Southern Corfu experienced a severe waste management crisis characterized by massive garbage accumulation near residential areas, forests, and schools. The crisis originated after the Court of Audit annulled a contract with a private contractor, leaving the municipal cleaning service with insufficient personnel and equipment to manage refuse. Residents reported public health risks, including infestations of rodents and cockroaches, and heightened wildfire risks.

In response to the escalating situation, a state of emergency was declared. To resolve the blockage in waste transport caused by the expiration of landfill contracts, Deputy Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Kostas Katsafados implemented a fast-track procedure. This emergency measure allows for the immediate transfer of waste to Kozani for a three-month period to clear the accumulation and restore normal services.

Under the emergency decree, strict rules regarding waste disposal are being enforced, and depositing trash outside of designated bins is prohibited to prevent further worsening of the situation. To manage hygiene concerns near schools, lime has been used to mitigate the impact of insects and odors.
