Corruption allegations against Mexico's former CNI director
Overview
Audomaro Martínez Zapata, the former director of Mexico’s National Intelligence Center (CNI), is facing allegations of involvement in organized crime and fiscal fraud. PAN legislator Federico Döring Casar has accused Martínez of operating a ‘fiscal fuel theft’ network by using privileged intelligence to benefit himself and others.
Martínez is also under scrutiny for recommending security officials with alleged criminal connections. These include Gerardo Mérida Sánchez, the Security Secretary in Sinaloa, who has been linked to drug trafficking by the U.S. government, and Hernán Bermúdez Requena, the former Security Secretary of Tabasco, who is currently imprisoned for allegedly leading the criminal group ‘La Barredora’.
