Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan has faced scrutiny regarding his financial dealings and assets. In early August 2026, businessman Veaceslav Platon alleged via Telegram that Tofan and former political leader Vladimir Plahotniuc participated in a scheme to acquire a controlling stake in Moldova Agroindbank at a price significantly below its estimated value. Platon claimed shares valued at at least €150 million were purchased for approximately €15 million, alleging involvement from representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The Prime Minister’s office declined to comment on these allegations, while Plahotniuc’s lawyer criticized Tofan’s public comments regarding Plahotniuc’s potential imprisonment as an interference with the judicial process. Following his appointment to the premiership on July 22, Tofan released updated asset and interest declarations. His filings reveal significant income from 2025, including approximately $906,000 in USD (excluding Moldovan leu). A substantial portion of this was derived from Horizon Capital, where he earned a $300,000 salary and a $317,680 performance bonus. His declared holdings include investments through Interactive Brokers, BT Capital Partners, and Revolut, alongside rental income from four apartments and four parking spaces totaling roughly $85,800. The disclosures also reveal that in 2024, Tofan provided a loan to Independent Trust Media SRL, the owner of the television station UNU TV founded by journalist Mariana Rață. This loan resulted in nearly $26,000 in income for Tofan after On August 21, 2026, political tensions escalated as Victoria Furtună, leader of the funds were repaid one year later.
