Corruption and asset mismanagement investigations in Vietnam
Overview
Authorities in Vietnam are pursuing multiple high-profile legal actions involving corruption, embezzlement, and the mismanagement of state assets.
In the metallurgy sector, the Ministry of Public Security’s Investigative Police Agency has recommended the prosecution of 31 defendants related to Viet Trung Minerals and Metallurgy Co., Ltd. (VTM), a subsidiary of the Vietnam Steel Corporation. Former VTM General Director Bùi Thanh Bình is accused of receiving bribes exceeding 62 billion VND by directing subordinates to sell iron ore below market rates. These actions reportedly caused state losses exceeding 434 billion VND in iron ore transactions and 13 billion VND in coke trading.
Concurrently, the Hanoi People's Court has scheduled trials for separate cases of financial misconduct. Chu Thi Thanh, Chairwoman of Thien Minh Duc Group, faces charges for embezzling over 79 billion VND from a petroleum stabilization fund through the illegal sale of fuel without VAT invoices. Additionally, former Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee Vice Chairman Le Duc Giang and 10 accomplices are scheduled for trial regarding violations in state asset management, illegal resource exploitation, and tax evasion.
