Costa Rica public transportation improvements
Overview
Costa Rica is advancing multiple initiatives to modernize its public transportation infrastructure. The country is working to electrify its public bus fleets through a partnership with the European Union, which is contributing 8 million euros to incorporate at least 75 European-made electric buses by 2027. This project, managed by the Banco de Costa Rica, utilizes a trust fund to provide financing mechanisms like leasing to mitigate high initial vehicle costs and includes funding for charging infrastructure and depot adaptations.
In a separate effort to improve accessibility, Costa Rica is launching an initiative to construct 37 modernized, sustainable, and inclusive bus stops across 21 localities. This project aims to support vulnerable populations, including senior citizens and individuals with disabilities, by providing weather protection and improving accessibility through ramps and sidewalks. The initiative is divided into two parts: the ‘Fondo Paratod@s’ alliance—comprising the CRUSA Foundation, Fundación Yamuni Tabush, and Portafolio Inmobiliario—will lead the construction of 20 stops across six provinces, while the Municipality of San José will build 17 matching structures.
Selected local governments, such as Barva, Heredia, Sarapiquí, and Santo Domingo, may receive up to $10,000 in funding and technical assistance. To ensure long-term viability, participating municipalities must provide matching funds for surrounding infrastructure, such as lighting and pedestrian crossings, and commit to ongoing maintenance. This project aligns with national decarbonization goals and addresses demographic shifts, as projections suggest one in four citizens will be aged 65 or older by 2050.
