The W. S. Cox Plate, Australia’s premier weight-for-age horse race, is scheduled to be held at Flemington Racecourse on October 24, 2026. This relocation marks the first time in the event’s 106-edition history that the race will be staged away from its traditional home at Moonee Valley. The move is necessitated by a $3 billion redevelopment of the Moonee Valley site, a ‘once-in-a-generation’ project involving the construction of a new grandstand, thoroughbred racing centre, and a residential precinct. The Moonee Valley Racing Club expects the race to return to its original venue for the 2027/2028 season. On October 23, 2026, the relocated event saw West Australian horse Cosmic Crusader secure a victory in the $6 million race at Flemington. Ridden by jockey William Pike and owned by Bob Peters, the win placed the horse in the company of legendary winners such as Northerly. The race featured high-profile storylines, including trainer Chris Waller’s pursuit of a seventh title and jockey James McDonald’s attempt at a fifth consecutive win, though McDonald finished third on Aeliana. Birdman took second place, followed by Ceolwulf in fourth. Earlier on the same day, the colt Buggsy won the Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes. The event was also notable for the participation of trainer Gai Waterhouse, whose favorite Sir Delius finished sixth, and jockeys Rachel King and Jamie Melham, who were competing to become the first female jockeys to win the event.
