Jacques and Jessica Moretti, who are among 16 individuals under investigation by the Valais Prosecutor’s Office regarding the New Year’s Eve fire at the Le Constellation nightclub in Crans-Montana, remain subject to court-ordered restrictions. The fire resulted in 41 deaths and 115 injuries. In early August, the Tribunal des mesures de contrainte du canton du Valais extended substitution measures for the couple for an additional 90 days, lasting until 9 October. These measures include a prohibition on leaving Switzerland and a requirement to report daily to a police station. The couple’s legal team has requested that daily in-person check-ins be replaced by video calls, a modification the judge indicated they might consider. On 23 August, Jacques Moretti was arrested and placed in pre-trial detention on separate charges of domestic violence against his wife, Jessica Moretti. The incident reportedly occurred between 11 and 12 August at the couple’s residence and resulted in Jessica Moretti being hospitalized. Defense attorneys Yaël Hayat, Nicola Meier, and Patrick Michod emphasized that these allegations are part of a “distinct procedure pertaining exclusively to their private lives,” though they noted the situation occurs amidst “intense personal hardship” following the January 1 tragedy. Following medical treatment for craniofacial trauma, Jessica Moretti has returned home. While neighbors reported hearing screams that prompted intervention, she has not yet filed a formal complaint. Under Swiss law, authorities may pursue the investigation officially without a victim's formal complaint. Meanwhile, Jacques Moretti’s defense has requested his transfer to a psychiatric facility, citing a “severe psychological breakdown” and significant weight loss. The broader investigation into the nightclub tragedy has also expanded to include local politicians, such as former security councilor Thibault Beytrison, concerning potential failures in public venue controls and fire safety inspections.
