Infrastructure development in Crete has seen both administrative adjustments and high-level political review. Recent updates indicate timeline extensions for specific projects, including the ‘Smart Bridges of the Crete Region’ project, now scheduled for completion by October 31, 2026, and roadworks on the Heraklion-Viannos axis, extended to December 19, 2026, due to landslides and traffic regulation needs. Concurrently, Greek officials have emphasized the strategic importance of regional development. Discussions involving the Development Minister and parliamentary updates highlighted the progress of major interconnected works, such as the Northern Cretan Axis (BOAK) dual tunnel at Kako Oros, which has exceeded 40% completion on certain sections. These projects, alongside the Southern Cretan Axis (NOAK) and the new Kastelli International Airport, are viewed as essential for the island’s balanced economic growth. In September 2026, Development Minister Takis Theodorakis oversaw further regional investments, including the inauguration of the Innovation and Advanced Education Hub at the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (ITE). Supported by public and European funding, this facility is part of a 60 million euro program to upgrade ITE’s infrastructure. Additionally, the Technical University of Crete is slated to receive approximately 1.6 million euros for building maintenance and accessibility upgrades. Minister Theodorakis reported that 95 investment projects are currently being implemented across Crete, totaling 270 million euros, with public support exceeding 140 million euros. As of late September 2026, the Crete Region is managing dual priorities regarding European Union funding. Officials are working to accelerate the implementation of the current Regional Program to improve absorption rates and convert resources into completed projects. Simultaneously, preparations are underway for the next programming period, which is expected to introduce structural changes. In Heraklion, local municipal efforts are also active, with a program underway to repair road damage and lay new asphalt.
