On 31 July in Agia Pelagia, Crete, a foreign tourist was reported to have asked a shop owner how much a payment would be for a 10-year-old girl, gesturing toward his genitals. The shop owner and the girl’s mother were shown video footage, but neither filed a complaint and no charges were initially filed. The following day, the Hellenic Police issued a clarification, stating that the man appeared intoxicated and had approached an adult female employee, not a minor. Police said their investigation found no evidence of an attempted solicitation of a child and that no criminal complaint had been lodged. All investigative material was forwarded to the prosecutor’s office for further review. While police findings suggest the man’s behavior was provocative and unsettling, they maintain no criminal offense against a minor occurred. The incident has since triggered significant public outcry on social media. On 07 August, the Hellenic Police released an official statement further clarifying the findings to address viral reports. The police reiterated that investigations showed the intoxicated man approached an adult female employee to ask her to meet him, rather than targeting a child. Although security footage and evidence confirmed the man made inappropriate gestures and comments, authorities maintain there is no evidence of an attempt to solicit a minor. The mother of the child present at the scene reportedly declined to file a formal complaint because the man's behavior was not directed toward the minor. All gathered material is being submitted to the Prosecutor's Authority.
