The Crew-13 mission to the International Space Station (ISS) successfully launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on October 1, 2026, following a three-week delay caused by an oxidizer leak in the Dragon spacecraft’s propulsion system. Utilizing a Falcon 9 rocket and the Crew Dragon spacecraft, ‘Grace’, the mission transported a four-person international crew: NASA Commander Jessica Watkins, NASA Pilot Luke Delaney, Canadian Space Agency mission specialist Joshua Kutryk, and Roscosmos mission specialist Sergey Teteryatnikov. Notably, Watkins becomes the first Black woman to lead a crew to orbit. The mission achieved a record-breaking transit, reaching the ISS in approximately seven hours and 50 minutes, marking the fastest launch-to-docking trip in ISS history. This rapid transit was aided by the station’s favorable position at the time of launch. The mission designation reportedly pays homage to the Apollo 13 mission. The crew is scheduled to remain aboard for approximately six months, replacing the Crew-12 team. Research objectives include Following a handover period with the departing astronauts, the crew will conduct research in areas including human health, materials science, space agriculture, and microgravity physiology. New mission priorities include the use of AI for monitoring crew wellness and biomedical research to support future human exploration of the Moon and Mars. This mission also represents the first time a Canadian astronaut has participated in a NASA commercial crew program.
