Authorities in Romania and Moldova continue to report various criminal activities involving fraud, smuggling, and illegal border crossings. In the Botoșani region of Romania, border police recently intercepted a 44-year-old man with dual Romanian and Ukrainian citizenship driving a Ukrainian-registered minibus. The driver was found with 1,510 pairs of slippers valued at 15,100 lei and attempted to use a falsified invoice to justify the cargo, resulting in a fine and a forgery investigation. In a separate incident near Manoleasa, a 24-year-old Moldovan man was identified after crossing the Prut river illegally to reach Western Europe; he was subsequently transferred to Moldovan authorities under the EU-Moldova readmission agreement. Legal proceedings and fraud cases have also emerged. In Romania, a woman in Botoșani received a suspended sentence for privacy violations involving a colleague’s phone, while two men in Constanța received suspended sentences for possessing illegal firearms and ammunition from Bulgaria. In Bucharest, a prosecutor has been indicted for driving under the influence of amphetamines and ketamine. In Moldova, law enforcement reported a significant fraud case in Chișinău where a 59-year-old woman lost over 2 million lei to scammers posing as government and telecommunications employees. Recent reports indicate expanding criminal activity, including environmental crimes in Moldova. Environmental inspectors in the Vadul lui Vodă forestry district discovered widespread illegal logging, where approximately 394 tree stumps were hidden under soil and vegetation. The stolen timber is valued at roughly 370,000 lei, with total forest damage exceeding one million lei. In Romania, a 27-year-old man in Pitești was detained for allegedly stealing a mobile phone at a market and subsequently demanding 1,000 lei to return it.
