Law enforcement in Crete has reported significant criminal activity and successful enforcement actions. In August, police recorded 827 arrests, noting that domestic violence was a primary driver of crime, accounting for 127 arrests. During this period, authorities also dismantled three criminal organizations involved in drug trafficking across Lasithi, Chania, and Heraklion, seizing various narcotics including cocaine and cannabis. Following these reports, investigations by the Heraklion Crimes Investigation Directorate led to the dismantling of a human trafficking ring. This organization systematically brought young women from Romania to Crete to be forced into prostitution. While three individuals have been arrested, police have launched a manhunt for a 31-year-old Romanian man believed to be the ring's leader. Recent developments confirm the ring operated by holding victims hostage and forcing them into sexual exploitation within hotels and private residences in Heraklion. Among those arrested are an elderly couple believed to have been responsible for guarding the women. Investigators noted that the ringleader maintained control by seizing travel documents and, in at least one instance, used a relationship with a victim to exert control and personally collect proceeds from the exploitation. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek to determine if more victims were involved. In September, the General Regional Police Directorate of Crete reported 711 arrests. Drug law violations were the most frequent, involving 101 individuals. Other notable categories included 74 cases of domestic violence, 74 cases of immigration law violations, 66 weapons law violations, 52 livestock thefts, and 46 traffic violations. Police also dismantled four criminal organizations: two involved in thefts in Chania and Heraklion, and two involved in drug trafficking in Rethymno and Lasithi. Seizures included over 14 kilograms of cannabis, 842 cannabis plants, and 123 grams of cocaine. To bolster efforts against criminal networks, a new Sub-Directorate for Combating Organized Crime has been inaugurated in the Archanes-Asterousia municipality.
