Law enforcement operations in Brazil have addressed various criminal activities, ranging from property theft to violent organized crime. Initial reports focused on the recovery of stolen property, specifically electric bicycles, following robberies in Três Lagoas and arrests made by the Municipal Guard in Campo Bom. Subsequent police actions expanded to include more severe offenses across multiple states, targeting kidnapping, extortion, luxury vehicle theft, and drug trafficking. Recent large-scale narcotics interceptions have involved coordinated efforts between the Federal Police and Federal Highway Police. In a multi-state operation, authorities intercepted over 521 kg of cocaine, beginning with a vehicle in Barra do Turvo, São Paulo, carrying 290 kg, which led to the discovery of an underground bunker in Itajaí, Santa Catarina, containing an additional 231 kg. This crackdown continued through ‘Operação Independência 2026’, a four-day intensive enforcement period conducted by the Federal Highway Police (PRF) across federal highways during the September holiday. The operation, which concluded on September 7, yielded varying results regarding road safety and crime prevention. In Santa Catarina, the operation confirmed the discovery of the aforementioned subterranean storage facility in Itajaí containing 231 kg of cocaine, alongside 104 accidents, 103 injuries, and three deaths. In Paraná, the PRF reported 95 accidents, 98 injuries, and three deaths, including the fatality of a seven-month-old infant in Ibiporã, while seizing 3.7 tons of marijuana. Other regional reports from the operation include seven deaths in Rio de Janeiro, three deaths in Pernambuco, and four deaths in Piauí, all involving motorcyclists. Additionally, in Roraima, officers seized 44 iPhones and three MacBooks hidden in a speaker box. Following these highway operations, law enforcement launched further targeted actions against organized crime and fraud. In Ceará, the Comando Vermelho faction reportedly used drones to deliver drugs and electronics to prisons.
