Criminal and corruption proceedings in Romania and Moldova

Legal and law enforcement activities in Romania and Moldova have focused on a range of criminal proceedings, including violent crimes, corruption, and financial fraud.

In Romania, judicial actions have included the sentencing of an individual for attempted murder in Botoșani, as well as the referral to trial of the Director General of the Romanian Road Authority for bribery and organized crime. Recent law enforcement actions include the detention of two men, aged 51 and 71, by DIICOT for the sexual exploitation and trafficking of an 11-year-old girl in Bucharest. Additionally, a 27-year-old soldier from Prahova was arrested for the alleged rape and production of child pornography involving three minors.

Economic crimes remain a significant focus. In Timiș, four individuals face trial for perjury related to the fraudulent use of EU funds. In Alba Iulia, a ‘Man in the middle’ email scam resulted in losses exceeding 76,000 euros for a company.

In Moldova, legal developments include a 23-year prison sentence for murder and the resumption of proceedings in the ‘Black Bag’ case involving former President Igor Dodon regarding corruption and illegal party financing. Authorities are also investigating two men in Chișinău and Vulcănești for large-scale money laundering after counterfeit euro banknotes with anti-fraud ink marks were detected in local ATMs. Furthermore, the National Police documented six major fraud cases in a single 24-hour period, including an incident where a 67-year-old pensioner was defrauded of nearly 290,000 lei by individuals posing as National Bank of Moldova employees.
