Criminal arrests and fraud investigations in Brazil

Overview

Authorities in Brazil have conducted various operations resulting in the arrest of individuals involved in diverse criminal activities, including fraud, violent crime, and social media-related offenses.

In Rio de Janeiro, law enforcement targeted digital influencers for fraudulent activities. Influencer Bruno Donato Maffei was arrested following a warrant from the Justice of Goiás; he is accused of fraud and ideological falsehood, allegedly using his social media following of over 400,000 to sell counterfeit or undelivered luxury goods, potentially defrauding more than 1,000 people since 2019. Other digital-related arrests include Marduzinn (Marcelo Wilman) for disseminating a fake DNA test.

Police have also dismantled several specialized fraud rings. In Paraná, a criminal organization was targeted for a “false lawyer” scam that defrauded an elderly individual of over R$ 750,000 by posing as legal professionals. In Curitiba, a couple, including a hospital employee, was arrested for selling falsified medical certificates using cloned stamps and high-precision printing.

Additional operations have addressed theft and violent scams. In Rio’s South Zone, three individuals were arrested for a taxi scam using tampered card machines to target the elderly. Authorities also intercepted the ‘Boa Noite Cinderela’ scam in Rio, where suspects allegedly drugged a Colombian tourist to steal US$ 1,200 and credit cards. Other recent actions include the arrest of a gang leader in the Uruguaiana market area, the apprehension of a suspect linked to over 70 vehicle robberies in Catete, and the arrest of a man in São Paulo for an armed pharmacy robbery.
